MOSFET: a technological revolution in regulators

The MOSFET transistor amplifies electronic signals. This technology has revolutionised the concept of the three-phase regulator. For many years, traditional regulators used silicon-controlled rectifiers (SCR) to divert the excess energy from the generator to the ground in order to maintain a constant battery voltage. This principle works well for small to medium displacement petrol engines. However, the new regulator technology based on MOSFET transistors is gaining popularity due to its optimal performance and many other advantages.

The power demand of modern motorcycles and quads is constantly increasing due to additional electronic modules: injection, high-efficiency lighting, and multiple accessories. This requires a significant amount of energy from the generator. The traditional regulator cannot meet this demand due to its low energy efficiency. Internal losses in the regulator cause overheating and damage when conducting currents over 35A. The traditional regulator has reached its limits and is not recommended for high-displacement vehicles with high energy consumption.

A traditional regulator presents a high voltage drop (approximately 1.5V at 35A) as it operates like a power diode. As the current increases, the power dissipated (heat) grows linearly. With the new MOSFET regulators, the voltage can be modulated like a controlled switch, with a different semiconductor architecture that makes them more efficient in managing energy. When active, it behaves with great power and offers a very low resistance that diverts all excess current from the generator to the ground. The voltage drop is therefore very low (less than 0.2V at 35A) and heat is drastically reduced. This is directly related to less heat generation of the device and a long lifespan of the regulator.

The MOSFET technology has been continually improving over the years, due to its widespread application in the electronic industry. The integration of semiconductor techniques offers higher power in smaller spaces with excellent efficiency. It also allows for faster switching, increased reliability, and optimal control under adverse conditions.

MOSFET regulators use improved current rectifier diodes with an extremely low voltage drop, which helps to avoid overheating. The internal controller has been completely redesigned to meet driving needs. The battery voltage is continuously monitored to adjust the output current in different energy consumption situations. The new electronic control avoids the use of linear ignitions, reduces the number of connections, and simplifies wiring topology. It also integrates a very low power standby mode, which prevents battery drain when the vehicle is not in use. A MOSFET regulator can increase the output current up to 50A, providing optimal voltage regulation and additional benefits: reduced heat, high efficiency, and advanced electronic control.
